Life saved by Filey RNLI crew

A man’s life was saved when he was rescued from the sea by Filey inshore lifeboat crew last night (Saturday 25th November).

Shortly before 8pm, UK Coastguard (Humber) requested the immediate launch of Filey’ s inshore lifeboat (ILB) , Braund, following reports of a person in the water just off Coble Landing, Filey.

A few minutes later, in complete darkness and at high water, the ILB launched on service with Matthew Wilkins, Tom Barkley and Sam Cross as crew.

Fortunately, the casualty was spotted in the searchlights from the lifeboat tractor and he was soon hauled aboard the ILB suffering from severe cold.

The ILB crew (who had completed a Casualty Care Course two days earlier) accompanied by 3 crew members, who are trained Paramedics, treated the man until he was handed over to the ambulance service and taken to Scarborough Hospital.

John Ward, Lifeboat Press Officer said: “The ILB crew undoubtedly saved a life last night. They were very quickly on the scene and carried out first aid treatment along with other crew members who are Paramedics. We would like to thank Filey Coastguard Rescue Team, Yorkshire Ambulance Service and North Yorkshire Police for the help. A job very well done by all the team here at Filey Lifeboat Station.”
